AdBlue consists of urea mixed with distilled water. The operating principle of the overall system is based on a chemical reaction of selective catalytic reduction in which harmful nitrogen oxides are converted into nitrogen and water vapor. AdBlue is injected in front of the SCR catalyst This process itself is controlled by various SCR sensors. The system is very sensitive and susceptible to failure, which leads to many problems in everyday driving.

Who does not know it, the spectacle usually begins with a display in the instrument cluster "Please refill AdBlue – No engine start in 1500 km". This message can no longer be ignored after the third time at  the latest, because then the engine goes into emergency mode and the vehicle only drives with greatly reduced power. With an empty tank or a defect in the sensors, the vehicle can no longer be started.

The disadvantages of AdBlue

• Starting the engine is no longer possible with an empty AdBlue tank.
• The high costs of refueling.
• The freezing point, it is only -11 degrees Celsius.
• Decomposition begins at about 60 degrees Celsius.
